Tasmanian devils are squat carnivorous marsupials with course black fur and irregular white markings on their neck, shoulders or rumps. They are mainly carrion eaters who have powerful jaws capable of crunching up flesh and bone. Their existence is threatened due to a deadly facial tumour disease that is decimating the native devil population. Insurance populations of disease free devils are now being established to ensure their continued existence.
