Greg is a self taught artist who paints what he is passionate about. He specialises in wildlife and military subjects. Many of his wildlife subjects are depicted as a part of the natural ecosystems that they inhabit. He believes that the habitat which the birds and animals are dependent on are of vital importance and hopes that his paintings help portray the interconnection between the two. “I really love the Australian bush. It has some magnificent gums and rainforest trees. Colours that seem to pop out of the bark of a tree can be pretty awesome if you take the time to look carefully enough. I’ve always been fascinated by living things and the way they interact with the living and non living elements of their surroundings. One of my biggest hopes is that my paintings and those of other wildlife artists help to impress on people the importance and value of the natural world and that there conservation is very much worthwhile” Art is Greg's second career, having been previously employed with the Royal Australian Air Force as an Airfield Defence Guard for almost 20 years. His intimate knowledge of life in the forces and the feeling of mateship and purpose he experienced during this period of his life is reflected in the detailed charcoal images of soldiers that he produces. Many of his portrayals show soldiers in everyday activities that are a normal part of life for a team out bush. “Some of the most professional people I have ever met have been the normal soldier out in the field. The everyday person may not appreciate the attention to detail that a good soldier undertakes in almost every aspect of their planning and preparation, the ability to think quickly and act decisively, often pushing their body past the normal level of endurance in all types of weather conditions, all in the name of not letting their mates down and getting the job done. It is these blokes that I try to accurately portray in my art”. Greg is married to Teena and has 3 children, Olivia, Patrick and Gabrielle. He resides and works from Tenterfield, NSW. He is a member of the Wildlife Art Society of Australia and in 2003, received the Geoff Douglas Memorial encouragement award for first year exhibitors. His passion for the environment and it’s inhabitants are reflected in the finished paintings with many of his works being sought by both Australian and overseas collectors. |
